It’s not hard to see why the amazing Catalan city of Barcelona is now high on everyone’s list of must-visit destinations. The city has everything, from amazing gothic architecture and energetic street entertainment, to wonderful bars and restaurants, non-stop nightlife, and even a sun-kissed beach.
Second only to Gaudi’s gothic cathedral Sagrada Famillia for popularity, the pedestrian Les Ramblas is one of Barcelona’s true hot-spots. Lined with dozens of outdoor cafes, it also has an abundance of stalls and kiosks, plus some amazing street entertainment including jugglers, singers, dancers, puppeteers and more. It’s breathtaking, and really does have to be seen to be believed.
Nearby is the slightly more relaxed Plaza Real, with a wide choice of bars and restaurants to choose from. If that’s not enough, head for the medieval gothic quarter of Barri Gotic and you’ll find a great choice of traditional tapas bars and cafes.
For culture, you’ve definitely come to the right place. Picasso grew up in Barcelona and the Museau Picasso plays homage to the great artist and his early work.
The city was also home to ‘God’s Architect’, Antoni Gaudi. Examples of his unique gothic creations can be seen all around the city and his most famous creation, the inspired Sagrada Famillia, is perhaps Barcelona’s most famous attraction.
Thanks to its balmy year round climate (not too hot in the summer and pleasantly mild in the winter) Barcelona makes the perfect ‘anytime’ destination. And with cheap flights always available, it’s a great place for an impulsive long weekend or even a cultured week away.
