The new town centre is Vabaduse valjak (Freedom Square) at the edge of the old town, and nearby is the giant matchbox of Hotel Viru, the former tourist flagship and notorious den of Cold War intrigue (every room was tapped and monitored by the KGB!). The Estonian maritime city of Tallinn has influences from Germany, Russia, Scandinavia and Italy. Tallinn’s calendar is lively with festivals of music, film, art, theatre, culture and food as well as sea-faring festivals, Opera Festival and the Tallinn Marathon.
