Itinerary
Old, new, and fictional worlds collide in this walking tour of Diocletian’s Palace. Not only is this impressive complex rich with history and a favorite local hangout, but it is the filming location for the hit TV series Game of Thrones.
We begin our Split walking tour on the Riva Promenade, a local spot to see and be seen. From there we enter the world of Westeros with a visit to Diocletian’s Palace cellars. Walk in the footsteps of the warriors entering Meereen to release the slaves for Khaleesi’s army. A walk through the palace will take you to the City Museum, an impressive 15th century Gothic building used as another location for Game of Thrones. Inside, you can check out the weaponry, photographs, paintings, and old documents that reveal why Split is one of the Adriatic’s most fascinating ports.
As we walk through the narrow streets into the heart of the city, peristil, it is easy to see why this imposing World Heritage Monument set the scene for the newest Game of Thrones kingdom. After all, it is the most preserved example of Roman architecture on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. The 1,700-year-old home to emperor Diocletian is a stunning example of a traditional royal villa, Hellenistic town, and Roman camp.
Top off your tour with a feast fit for Tyrion Lannister with a G.O.T-inspired meal of eggs, bacon, handmade sausages, and, of course, warm bread with sea salt – a staple of the Westerosi diet. Quench your thirst to be ruler of the Seven Kingdoms on local coffee, mint tea, and a pint of local beer.
We finish our tour back on the Riva Promenade – a great time to ask your guide to point out local haunts for goblets of wine, lemon cake, and dragon-taming…and modern fare, too!
