Highlights / General details
Situated on the coast south west of the city center, Xinghai Square is the largest square in Asia. The square covers a total area of 45,000 square meters and the name of the square means "the Sea of Stars" in Chinese. The name of the square resembles the shape and design of the center of the square, which looks like a star, with two white marble pillars and 9 big dings. The square was built to honor Hong Kong's return to China in the year 1997 and represents the "New Spirit of Dalian". Xinghai Square also boasts of imprints of 1000 pairs of footprints of Dalian people, which bears testimony to the enterprising spirit of the denizens of Dalian. The importance of the square can be proved from the fact that it features prominently in the tourist literature on Dalian.
For a long time, Renmin Square was known under the name Stalin’s Square built for commemorating the liberation of northeastern China by the Red Army of the Soviet Union’s. It was changed to its present name in 1994, and five years later the huge statue of a Soviet soldier was moved to Lushun Soviet Army Martyr Cemetery. The monument from the middle of the square has been replaced by a massive European-style fountain and white marble waterfall cloister. The fountain features the Chinese style “Dancing Water” display with the splashes of water “dancing” in the rhythm of the music. This is one of Dalian ‘must see’ places, especially interesting at sunrise and dusk where emanating water creates specific atmosphere liked by locals who gather there to join the dancing water.
Zhongshan Saqure, in the heart of the city's financial district, is surrounded by some of the best examples of colonial-era architecture in Dalian. Though the square was first laid out by the Russians most of the buildings around the square were built between 1910 and 1920 by the Japanese. The square itself serves as a social hub, with locals gathering during the evening to play hacky-sack or watch football games on the big screen above the Dalian Hotel. Square is currently under major construction.
